View Full Version : Okay, I'm a dope, but I've been meaning to ask ...
Hi everyone,
I drop into this forum almost everyday, but most of the time I just can't follow what you folks are talking about. (Who said "ignorance is bliss"?)
Can a few things be explained to me? What is a:
Blog?
Swish?
Cronjob?
:?: Thanks!
Flash ho

Hi Josh,
Here are some short explanations, a google search will reveal allot of detailed info.
A blog - an online diary of sorts. An easy to update web page, usually run to a specific target audience that would benefit from immediate news , vs waiting till a site page wqas fully designed. A quick way to spread info fast. Here is Mike Chanbers blog, he is a heavyweight at macromedia ( a software company), so, instead of waiting for MM to update their technotes or whatever, Looking here brings instant news.

Swish is a animation software program, similar to flash, It generates flash type of animations based on following a wizard interface vs flash which requires a bit more learning. www.swish.com
Cornjob - This is the perfect time of year for corn jobs. After the corn is harvested, the stalks are left standing and a tractor carves out a maze. Great fun for the kids. Karen will give a further explanation , I'm sure.

:?: :?: A cornjob?
Flash ho you're too much! :rotfl2:
Josh, while not so eloquently as Flash ho, I also bow to Karen's expertise on cronjobs. She has learned the hard way and knows all about that subject. :)
Yeah, Richard has the answers alright - Let's harvest that corn :rotfl2:
That swish link should be http://swishzone.com I have used swish to a small extent. Shane has more experience with it than anyone here I think. I can definitely agree that it is easier to learn than Flash.

Hi Josh,
I'm the one who should feel dumb ... I still haven't been successful in setting up a cron job, but I DO know what it is ... and what it's SUPPOSED to do ... even if I can't make it do it!
A cron job is just a certain command that you set up to run repeatedly at prescribed dates and times. Basically in the cron job, you provide the server with three pieces of information: (1) a date and time that you want a certain repetitive function to be performed; (2) a command that tells your server to carry out that particular function; and (3) the URL of the file containing the code for the function to be carried out.
Each individual function you want carried out is a cron job. You can have many cron jobs set to run at different times to do different things. Just makes repetitive functions easier to keep track of, since you are having them run automatically.
An easy example would be: Say you had a database on your server. It collected information automatically, as people entered it on your site. You might set up a cron job that would purge or dump some of the older information in the database on a particular date at a particular time so that you didn't have to do it manually. A chron job is an automatic command to your server to perform a certain function at a certain time. It is very similar to your Windows Task Manager, where you can set up jobs; i.e., running a scan of your c drive at a particular time automatically.
i.e., scan my c drive every Tuesday at 9 a.m.
I won't even pretend to know much more than that. After all, I was not successful in setting up a cron job the correct way. But, somewhere along the line, someone might figure it out.
I think I'll stick to corn jobs!!!!
Aahhhhh .... let me see.
You set up a BLOG to report to anyone interested in the progress you're making harvesting the corn.
Then you use a CRONJOB to change, move, dump, etc. your BLOG stuff because you're too busy using your SWISH software to create a snazzy animation to add on to your site.
Yep, by george I think I got it!
Many thanks to EVERYONE!!! :D
hhmmm ... that blog thing may have some marketing applications. Gonna have to think a bit on that.
Thanks again to all you great teachers. :D

Good concept, Josh and a good idea about the marketing with a Blog too.
Hey, I wonder if we can get Karen to figure out a cronjob to make the 1-message autoresponder be a sequential one... say a dozen or more messages, each delivered at a different date.... Hmmmmm, Karen?
We're still waiting, Dusty Tic, toc, tic, toc, tic, toc.

More smilies, more smilies, more smilies! Now that you've got some of us addicted to the pesky little creatures I, um I mean we need more to feed our habit. Either that or you need to start a 12 step program.
PS...Fred, this is me ignoring you...

OK, As long as you keep supplying the gifs, I won't complain - They are very creative. You have a sharp mind - Am I really saying this? Must be the planets.

Hey Fred,
Before I can create a chronjob to send out multiple messages every other minute of every other day, I have to figure out how to send them to OTHER PEOPLE!!!! Those 900+ emails I sent to myself were scary!  (Yeah. I can laugh about it now!)
