For the past several days I'm getting bombarded by e mails from " Microsoft", "E mail client", "Microsoft Security Patch", "Mail undeliverable", etc.
all with deadly attachments. AVG is catching them, so no problem. Anyone else getting these? They look very real, but checking properties shows they are from some 9 year olds in The Isle of Worms.
Careful out there.
ps, I need a good printer ( a company, not hardware :)
for a brochure containing many photos. Anybody have some leads?

Well for general stuff, unless you need tons of them, you can get by with
scanning your web page "brochure style" and printing copies of it.
But if you do need tons of brochures, or need good color-separation
quality printing... skip the "quick print" shops... go directly to the big
printing businesses in your area....
Or maybe best of all, check out this guy for quality printing at a fair price:

Wellll, you'd better sit down, no matter who gives you a quote on that, lol.
Hard copy proof by Monday.... maybe, if you can send pre-stripped flats by yesterday.
I've also received stuff from microsoft. Fortunately, I read on another forum about it so I delete immediately...........jan

(Thanks for the heads up on 404, my fault been changing stuff...working now...too late I know.......)
I don't like Mondays, but hard copy proofs always given, shipping would add $ to your cost from here.....is it print only or design/print ? I can give you ballpark (or soccer pitch) figures as a guide if needed.......or any advice on what your chosen printer may require file format wise, if it's your inhouse design, just shout. (if you find one that's a good price but wants Mac files, embedded pdf's or whatever I'll convert it for you no problem..just mail the files over....)..(I'm sure you know all this stuff, but just in case..happy to help.)
Thanks for the plug Helen, appreciate it. :P
.....I was getting those bloody "microsoft" email's about 3 weeks ago...had 200 in one day.......I wasn't a happy bunny.

I haven't done very much high end print work, but I've done a bunch of 600dpi layouts in FH, embedding fonts , files etc, but I have a very basic question - do I lay it out ( "it" being 11x17 with one fold) as 4 - 81/2 x 11's or as 2 - 11 x 17's?? I'm sure the printer could answer this, but it is Sunday and I want to get a feel for this as the contract is due Monday morning. Appreciate the offer for you to do the print, but it is print only and shipping would add too much time and money. I'm getting prices online for around $500usd consistently. (qty 500, specs above), but the range is from $200 ( 300dpi) to $1400 ( 2800dpi) and 2 at $500 ( 2800dpi) and a few others at 500, but unclear about the quality. Do those #'s sound about right, in the ballpark, soccerfield?
Shane, you'll love this - go to rubberball.com, a stock photo company, and ask for their free hardcopy catalogue, super cool cover.
Helen or Shane - " pre-stripped flats" are those cheap rental units? a pre digital method? or something I need asap? :) newB here.

Hey man, Rubberball very cool, neat. Thanks for the link.
Lay it out flat, as you would see it unfolded, if you follow me, with each (unfolded) piece seperate. So to answer you question 2 x 11x17's.
I know you are aware of the bleed, but just to confirm 3mm all round is standard.
Below is a rough sample of a leaflet laid out for printing, simple two sided one fold in the middle (your printer will add fold points)
http://www.webprintdesign.com/leaflet.gif
Prices seem good. Anything around $500 is very competitive. As you know the higher the dpi the better, but on good quality paper with good quality print anything including or over 300dpi should be be cool.
Again maybe too much info but embed the fonts and send them the fonts too, not always needed or nessercary but kinda belts & braces approach.
Important** Get actual paper and gloss samples from each. It aint cheap if the papers rubbish.
Even if you aren't sending the file as a pdf (your probably not) ask them if they can print straight from pdf's. Older print machines can't, it's a good test to see if they have newer/better print equipment. Better than asking "are your machines outta the ark then ?"
Anything else, shout.

Thanks Mate!
one more question, can coating ( varnishing) be done selectively? like just the photos and let the page be non coated?
Shane
09-21-2003, 06:51 PM
No probs...sure selective coating can be done, it can be really effective...you'll see it used with metallic finishes on book jackets, stuff like that, gloss selective finish works the same way. Looks cool, course we want to see what your up to when it's done....... :D
On another subject (but can't keep quiet about it) got Studio MX 2004 (with Flash pro, of course lol) arriving Wednesday! Woo Hoo!!

:D "pre-stripped flats" was just a joke...
it means that color separations have been made on a special graphics
camera and every preparation process done, including typesetting, page
layout, more camera work, stripped (negatives taped, opaqued, etc.) into
a masking sheet, which will be used to make the offset printing plate, LOL
(But I'm sure they have much faster ways to get to the same result today.)
Just listen to Shane and you'll be fine. :D

But I'm sure they have much faster ways to get to the same result today.) yeap, it is called Freehand or Photoshop :) I knew you were kidding and so was I .:)
Just found my info on "spot varnish" . it can be done using varnish, but not using the aqueous coating. just in case anybody is following this closely. right :) I'm flying by the seat of my pants here.
Pro version huh? whew , as2 , oop is scary, but I'm going with pro too, hoping I can "get" as2/oop, but mostly for the video performance. btw, If you have flash player 7 , ck out the video on my ho site, it runs faster and smoother. I have the trial, but haven't opened it yet. busy ( finally!) Will purchase Studio in a week or 2. I can't wait!! How is FH, DW and FW?
Brochure thing is a real estate thing. 2 ranches each with their own brochure, 6 more to follow if this flys. website for each, but that is minor to them, hardcopy and a cd are what they really want, but they got a package! Knowing I have MM and Google, I can do anything!! j/k ( or at least propose anything! )

Hi Helen, pre-stripped flats is/was lotta work!! I know some still do it, same as some still screenprint or letterpress...these guys do amazing stuff...(the hard way :D )
www.aestheticapparatus.com
www.planetpropaganda.com (warning full screen)
If you are doing much print work Richard get yourself a couple of back issues of Computer Arts.... issue 43 & issue 44 give good basics, quick clear info. Or just shout, happy to help (of course) if I can.
Good USA print design magazine: HOW..subtitled Design Ideas at Work. Up to date good clear info, and plenty of USA printers advertising including all special finishes, I subscribe to it, good stuff.
Yeah getting Flash Pro for video stuff plus don't wanna miss out if I need it for anything in the future...easier to pay the extra now. Running the trials now waiting for boxed product (I'm like a kid, want the bloody box, y'know...) FW has new shape stuff cool but not used it yet. The main thing I noticed about FW 2004 is it's faster. A lot faster at rendering etc etc. Very fast. I think you get the point, it's fast, yeah ? :D
DW 2004. Excellent. CSS. Great. Love it.
Only made a banner in Flash Pro, no time to explore, hid under the bed for three days when I started reading about AS 2...scarier than Jeepers Creepers 2.........
Freehand, very good. Extrusion tool is excellent as are perspectives etc. Not sure I'd buy it alone but certain I wouldn't be without it.
Just checked your video in 7, smooth man. Flys along. Great stuff. I've found Flash Player 7 very stable....fast smooth video has to be the way forward on the net..............

Thanks Shane, I'll get those copies of Computer Arts. I subscribe to How and only found a few printers there that do small lots (500) . I'll keep looking. OT. speaking of mags, DV is another great one, almost as good as HOW. (digital video, not print) later

Unless that has changed a lot too, you don't see quotes on less than 500
(more likely 1,000) because the setup/preparation cost is the same for 1
as for 1 zillion. After that setup cost, you are only paying for paper, ink
and run time.
So the second 500, 1,000 or whatever, will be WAY cheaper if ordered at
the same time (for same print run); and great pricing for future print
runs. The trick is to make sure you won't need to be changing the copy
for future printings... as in prices, etc.
Even if you do expect changes, you may be able to convince your
prospect that more than 500 lowers the cost per each, and for their
advertising as well, since they can cover a larger market area for little
more.
OK I B Quiet now. :D
