I'm trying to help a friend sort out an email problem with Outlook Express on her XP machine, and have decided that one solution might be to uninstall and reinstall OE. Since I don't use OE myself, I'm a bit unsure about how to do it.
Thing is, I go to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, and OE doesn't appear in the list of programs that I can remove, even though I know it's installed and working. Well, sort of working -- that's the problem. Is there some reason why OE isn't in that list? I thought that maybe it's considered to be a part of Windows XP, but I can't find it there either.
Obviously I can't uninstall it unless I can find some way of doing that!
Does anyone have any ideas?
Many thanks.

I think Outlook Express is part of Internet Explorer. Try reinstalling the latest version of IE. That should fix things.

Hi Steve,
I know that the last time I upgraded to IE 6, along with that I automatically got the upgraded Outlook Express 6.
I copied this off the Microsoft site:
Downloads and Updates
Where can I download the latest version of Outlook Express?
To get the latest version of Outlook Express, you need to download and install the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer. Why? Because Outlook Express is a component program of Internet Explorer.

I have Outlook listed on my control panel, but I don't have XP, I'm still using good old 98SE. I think Botiff (Terri) & Cartman (Karen) have XP?
LOL, not much help but I wanted to say Hi!

Fred and Dusty:
Thanks for the explanation -- I'll try to uninstall and reinstall IE and hope that that will sort out the OE problem.
Helen:
I'll try to get my brain around the Christmas tree ornament thingey, but don't expect anything too clever or whizzo. :?
Steve
I do not think you can uninstall IE. It is part of the Windows operating system. If it works like Win 98 use to, when you click to remove IE, you have the choice to go back to an earlier version, repair or upgrade. Some people who have tried to delete IE have had serious problems thereafter.

Steve, I hope your Outlook Express problems work out with no difficulty.
On the ornaments, clever is not required, lol. Just have fun with us on it
and the kids get the benefit; quantity and fun are the keywords here. :)

Thanks for the warning, Fred. Sounds like, at best, I can try "repair" (for that is truly what is needed), otherwise I'd better step gingerly around the problem and not dig an even deeper hole.
I think she is also having a problem with Norton Anti-virus, so the OE problem could be just a symptom of something more serious.
I may be out of my depth here :!:

An update:
Seems that the Norton AV program had been deactivated in October, which made me suspicious of an infection, so I concentrated on this problem. I uninstalled Norton but the reinstall failed. So I then installed Anti-Vir, a free AV program out of Germany. After updating its files, I ran Anti-Vir and it revealed a "backdoor" type infection. After deleting the infected file, I tried running OE again, and this time it ran ok, so the immediate email problem was solved and I didn't have to try to repair OE or mess about with IE.
Thanks for all your help.
Glad you got it working. I never thought of a virus possibly being the cause. I too have had problems with Norton AV with Win XP. I never could delete the entire program. I'm now running McAfee AV and have no complaints.
