Hello! I'm Corrina and here's my issue. :D

I added a new mail account to my domain. Then I used the option (under Mail Account Maintenance) to auto configure that account in Outlook Express. It all seems to install fine, and when I get into Outlook, I can get any mail in my inbox for that account. However, when I attempt to send mail, it gives me the following alert:

:!: The message could not be sent. You do not have any accounts configured for sending e-mail. Please verify your account configuration.

I use Outlook 6.

Thanks for any help!

Hi Corrina,

Welcome to the forum. This may be your problem. Some ISPs require you to use their server to send mail. For example, I now have Cox Cable as my ISP. I also have a Bell South email address and my webmaster@rightstuffhosting address. Outbound mail will not work unless I set the Outgoing Server (SMTP) on all the accounts to "smtp.east.cox.net" When I had BellSouth as my ISP the Outgoing Server has to be set as "mail.bellsouth.net"

If you haven't done so, I suggest that you try setting the account in question to your ISP. Since your inbound mail works, I think that may be the solution for your problem.

Hello Fred!

Ok. I have MSN as my ISP, so I went in and reconfigured my SMTP to "mail.msn.com" (I was guessing that that would be the correct setting). It worked for a minute, then I got this error message:

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'corrina@cdgraphics.net', Server: 'mail.msn.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

That's all Greek to me. I think maybe I should just wander over to MSN and see what the deal is.

Thank you for your help... I appreciate it greatly! :D

P.S. Dawn recommended me to Right Stuff Hosting after I had a nightmare experience with Blue Domino and I LOVE it here. Excellent company with excellent service.

Does anyone here have MSN as a provider? Corrina, I will check around and see if I can find a solution from a friend nearby that has MSN. There may be a delay. She evacuated due to Hurricane Ivan.

Thank you Fred. The only reason I even wanted to use Outlook is because you can edit the HTML of the e-mail and make it look any way you wish. But if I have to send mail through Horde or Squirrel I'll live.

I DID go to MSN's mail settings page. I didn't find anything suggesting that they require the use of their mail system for outgoing messages. They even had a place for me to transfer a POP3 account into MY (ISP provided) e-mail account. It didn't work too well.

It has to be the way I'm entering my outgoing mail server information. I thought that the incoming and outgoing were the same (mail.domain.com). Is that wrong? I even tried smtp.cdgraphics.net just for the heck of it! In any event... I'm going to do a Web search for using domain mail through Outlook and see what pops up.

Thank you, again, Fred, for all of your help.

Corrina - I'm home from work. Try this - In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) box: type smtp.email.msn.com

Nope. Didn't work. Okay... I officially give up. My new opinion is that Outlook is WAY overrated!!! :x (LOL) I'm never opening it again! It came with my computer anyway, not my ISP... that's why I was pretty sure that my ISP didn't require their own SMTP settings, but who knows... Microsoft is a greedy "little" company.

Thank you, Fred, for all your help. I sincerely appreciate it! :D I promise the next problem I come into the forum with will be MUCH less difficult and much less irritating! :)

P.S. Hello to Helen too! I've been so caught up in my problem I didn't even say hello to her!

Corrina - one more thing to check -
In addition to what I posted above - In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) box: type smtp.email.msn.com....
On the Server tab -
Make sure Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SAP) is *NOT* checked.
Make sure "Server Requires Authentication" *IS* checked. Click Settings
On the next page -
Check "Log in using"
type full email address and password and check "Remember password"

Helen likes Horde; but I like Outlook because it has a lot of great user features. I've also been using it for 20 years so I'm use to Bill Gate's little projects.

I'm starting to really dislike MSN here. I entered all of your settings and it started to send mail, then a sign-in box popped up and asked for my MSN user ID and password. I entered them, but it just kept popping up over and over and over again, after every time I pushed "OK".

So I contact Tech Support via online chat and this guy was from another PLANET. He wasn't from this country, because his sentences made NO sense at all. English is definitely his second language and he has not gotten a handle on it.

He had NO clue what I was asking him, and provided NO help whatsoever. I asked him specifically how to configure my OUTGOING mail settings using MSN's e-mail server. All he told me (after, literally, 25 minutes of waiting) was why I couldn't send mail using MY domain mail server. Seriously. I painted all of my nails in the time it took him to explain to me something that had nothing to do with my question.

I gave up on him and went back into Outlook and tried again, but got the same pop-up results so I just shut it down. I'll do another Web search, but if that doesn't yeald results, I will officially give in.

Thank you, again, Fred. I love Outlook too and wish I could get it to work. Your settings seemed to work, but for some reason MSN just started acting up.

I'm off to bed now. I have a long day tomorrow. If I figure out a solution to this, I'll post it. God forbid anyone else gets this headache.

Ok. I was forced to give up on getting my domain mail to run through Outlook. According to MSN, they do not allow third-party email addresses to run through their server because of spamming issues (risks) and the fact that they will be the ones showing up in the headers of the sent e-mails.

I understand that and decided to find an alternate way to send mail through Outlook with CD Graphics as the sender and the from and reply to addresses set to my domain mail address.

I aquired a (free) Hotmail account and set it up through Outlook (which works fine, b/c Hotmail is an MSN service), set all the outgoing settings (from, from e-mail, reply to e-mail) the way I wanted them and that was it. So I receive my domain mail through Outlook, and I send mail (seemingly through my domain) in Outlook too. Now I can use the email template that I wanted to use all along and no one's the wiser as to where the e-mail really originates from.

This is good enough for me.

Great. :o I'm glad you found a satisfactory solution. I know spam is a big problem and only seems to get worse each day. :(
