I had a problem yesterday when I signed on. I could not bring up any of our sites. This lasted for about 2 minutes. So was our server down? The server monitors show they were not down. I get a daily report from an independent company who monitors our signal. Here is the latest finding.
Number of accesses: 262
Number of good responses: 262
Percent uptime: 100%
Since the Internet is one big network, it is no different than any other network - like TV - if NBC fails, your local affiliate is still on the air and your TV is on but all you may see is snow or "network difficulties".
I'm talking about my day job here. I run a constant "ping" on my computer at work because we have a line problem and I need to monitor the signal from our corporate office to our local office - so this has nothing to do with RightstuffHosting - just using it as an example. A ping is a signal that goes out each second to an IP address and should come back with numbers that tell you how many micro seconds it took for rhe signal. You would be surprised at the amount of "Timed out" pings I get. This happens on all computers. We generally won't notice these "timed out" pings unless we are downloading/uploading files or changing pages.
Here is an enample of the trace route of a typical URL - as you can see, it goes through many routes. These results are common on all sites
