I personally use the same servers as our clients for all my email, I have approx 50 email addresses across all servers.

I received approx 1,000 - 1,500 emails per day much of which is spam, here is how I handle my incoming SPAM

1. Login to my cpanel http://www.mywebsitenotyours.com/cpanel

2. Click the [ MAIL ] icon, then the [ SpamAssassin ] Link.

3. Click the link [ Enable SpamAssassin ] then [ go back ] link.

4. Click the link
[ Configure SpamAssassin ( Required to rewrite Subjects ) ]

5. [ required_score ] I have mine set to 1 then I white list all my friends and clients, I black list all the people I don't want emails from. Scroll down and save.

6. Click the [ go back ] link twice, then click the [ E-mail Filtering ] link.

7. Click [ Add Filter ] link.

8. Where it says Filter [ Subject ] drop down list I change to [ Body ] that [ Contains ] in the empty box I put these words only

Spam detection software

9. [ Destination ] I leave at Discard.

10. Click the link [ Activate ]

Please be aware this will tag and delete emails marked as spam, SpamAssassin is not perfect and it can mistakenly tag emails from legitimate senders, or senders who are on an ISP which is a know Spammer.

You need to decide if you wish to use SpamAssassin as a tool to reduce your spam, emails tagged and deleted are lost forever, you can choose to use different filters to handle the spam.

One such way is to let the spam be tagged but not deleted, let it flow to your email program on your computer but setup a RULE in outlook express to tell it to put emails which have in the body of the email these words:

Spam detection software

straight to your deleted Items folder, you can then periodically check through your deleted items folder for any legitimate senders and then whitelist them in your cpanel before emptying your deleted items folder.

Setting up Outlook express to delete emails from the 'Deleted Items' on closure is a good way to remove the spam without having to click each one to delete.

Great advice Nicholas. I use MS Outlook. I have also had great luck with a program called "Spam Fighter". I use it on 2 computers and I use Norton on 2 other computers. I find that "Spam Fighter" does a better job and it is free. It creates a "Spam Folder" for you to review.

I found an article in a magazine about the program. This program works with MS Outlook and Outlook Express. I have the free version at work. It has an ad at the bottom of outgoing emails that says how many emails were filtered. I use the Pro version at home and it is ad free. I would recomment either version without hesitations. They have regular updates that are self installing.
